On Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers split a couple of games with the Houston Astros organization. The Memphis Redbirds beat their Triple-A counterparts from Fresno 10-3, while Springfield was handed a 6-2 loss from their Texas League foe Corpus Christi. In the lower minors, Palm Beach beat Buies Creek, while Peoria lost to Quad Cities.
Here are the highlights with some personal notes.

Mason Katz has bounced around the Cardinals minor league system since being drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. While he once tried to transition behind the plate, it looks like he used in a utility role. After a limited 2016, Katz looks to be healthy and could be a factor with Triple-A Memphis.
Ryan Helsey and Matt Pearce are intriguing pitching prospects. Helsley found himself in our top 20, while Pearce would have probably been in the 30-40 range. With that said, they are completely different pitchers. Pearce is a control pitcher, while Helsley is a fire-baller. Both could have MLB futures.
Stefan Trosclair has started this spring hot. By my calculations, this was the third time his name appeared in the highlights with a home run. He was the Cardinals 20th round pick in 2016 out of Louisiana Lafayette. He played his 2016 season with the GCL Cards and had an OPS over .800. I would not be surprised to see him with the Peoria Chiefs to start the season. His power is real.
Ross Vance is a 25-year old undrafted free agent from 2016. He played last season with the Johnson City Cardinals and went 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA and an impressive 54 strikeouts over 40 innings pitched. He is another candidate for the Peoria Chiefs for 2017.
The Cardinals minor league teams join the big club in an off-day on Tuesday. They will be back in action on Wednesday.
