Dakota Hudson and Oscar Mercado continued their good play Saturday night, as the Springfield Cardinals blew out the Arkansas Travelers 16-1 at Hammons Field.
Hudson, he of six straight quality starts, made tonight his seventh as he pitched 7 innings of run one ball. His fastball sat 95-97 on the stadium gun consistently, and used what has been called “the best slider in the organization” to put the Travelers away with two strikes.
Springfield opened the scoring in the top of the first when Oscar Mercado and Bruce Caldwell walked. Adolis Garcia followed that with double just fair down the left field line, scoring two. The other Garcia, Anthony, singled him in with two outs.
Arkansas plated their only run of the night in the second, when Tyler Marlette singled to open the frame. He advanced to third and a base hit by Kyle Waldrop, a hard hit grounder under Caldwell’s glove at first. Hudson was able to limit the damage by inducing a 4-6-3 double play and a ground out to end the inning. Hudson did not allow another runner past second base.
After an Anthony Garcia homer in the fourth, Springfield blew the game open in the fifth and sixth. Back-to-back-to-back doubles by Mercado, Caldwell, and Adolis Garcia plated two in the fifth. The Cardinals offense wasn’t done. They scored two more in the sixth, six in the seventh, and three in the eighth. The 16-1 thumping was Springfield’s most lopsided win to date, but they were eliminated from the Texas League North first half race with Northwest Arkansas’ win.
