Minors Report: Aledmys Diaz goes 2-4, Zac Gallen gets First AAA Win

Aledmys Diaz will join the Cardinals core group of players

Memphis 5, New Orleans 1

Aledmys Diaz went 2-4 with a run scored. He started at shortstop and hit 5th in the Redbirds’ lineup. Carson Kelly hit his eight home run of the year, while Wilfredo Tovar notched his second. Jose Adolis Garcia also launched his first AAA home run and his seventh overall.

Memphis starter Zac Gallen (pictured below) had a very good night in his second start at AAA. He went six innings, struck out eight, while only yielding one run on four hits. He picked up his first AAA win and seventh of the season overall. His season ERA is now 2.19 across Palm Beach (A+), Springfield (AA), and Memphis (AAA).

Springfield 4, Midland 3

Bruce Caldwell, Jacob Wilson, and Dickie Joe Thon all had two hit nights for Springfield. Anthony Garcia and recently signed John Nogowski each had two RBI’s to drive in all of the runs for Springfield. Randy Arozarena also went 1-5 out of the leadoff spot to record his first AA hit.

Dakota Hudson improved to 7-3 on the season. He went 7.2 innings, giving up ten hits, three runs and striking out four. Corey Baker threw the final 1.1 innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Palm Beach 0, Charlotte 3 (Game 1)

Thomas Spitz was the only Palm Beach hitter to record a multi hit game as he went 2-3. Shane Billings went 1-3 and is now hitting a combined .316 between Peoria (A) and Palm Beach (A+).

Palm Beach starter Jake Woodford struggled against the Charlotte lineup. He gave up three runs, on eight hits, while last just 4.2 innings. He is now 5-4 with a solid 3.09 ERA on the season. The loss last night was his first since May 27th.

Palm Beach 4, Charlotte 1 (Game 2)

The offense was able to put some runs on the board in game two. Blake Drake and Leobaldo Pina each went 2-3 with Pina adding a RBI. Former Mariners prospect and Stanford Cardinal Austin Wilson was 1-2 with a pair of RBIs, but is hitting just .176 on the year.

Ross Vance started for Palm Beach, going four innings while giving up one run on three hits. Ramon Santos picked up the win after throwing a scoreless fifth inning. Jacob Evans recorded the save after throwing two scoreless frames to shut the door.

Peoria 2, Kane County 10

The Peoria offense struggled last night as they managed just five hits total. Brian O’Keefe hit is seventh home run of the season out of the DH spot. Third baseman Juan Yepez,  who the Cardinals acquired for Matt Adams, drove in the other Peoria run. He is hitting .245 with five homers since joining Peoria. 2015 first round pick Nick Plummer went 0-3 and saw his average fall to .181.

Ian Oxnevad suffered another loss and saw his season record hit 2-8. He struggled through five innings. Giving up seven runs on 12 hits while only striking out one. Keaton Siomkin followed up with 1.2 shaky innings himself. He gave up three runs on four hits in his first taste of full season ball. Bryan Dobzanski was the one bright spot for the Peoria staff as he was able to yield no runs, on two hits over 1.1 innings.

State College 8, Batavia 2

State College exploded for eight runs on twelve hits. Evan Mendoza and Joshua Lopez each had three hits and two RBIs. Lopez hit his third homer of the young season, and is now hitting .548 overall. The 21 year old native of Venezuela also had a good season last year with Johnson City as he slahed .305/.388/.468.

State College starter Daniel Castano followed up his last scoreless outing with another great start. He improved to 3-0 following seven strong innings. The former Baylor Bear gave up two runs, on seven hits while striking out ten. His ERA on the season is now down to 1.71 and he has 25 strikeouts through 21 innings.
