Watching the Cardinal offense flounder for the third time in four games has left little hope for any kind of run in the division. The organization looked to acquire offense at the trade deadline but the market for position players never materialized. The lineup structure has very few options and the meat of the order last night gave fans very little optimism that they would score enough runs needed to win any kind of shootout. Jedd Gyorko hasn’t been the same since the all-star break, the league has caught up to Paul Dejong and Matt Carpenter cant find footing in the lead-off spot. Its time for the club to promote Aledmys Diaz and see if the 2016 all-star can find lighting in a bottle and possibly spark the offense.
Diaz will need to play shortstop
This will upset the fans that believe Dejong should be the long-term answer at shortstop, but Dejong is the player with more experience at multiple positions. Three-fourths of the infield are struggling offensively. Playing time should not be an issue trying to find at bats. Gyorko was replaced in the ninth inning last night for a pinch runner. While some people were upset that the runner was Carlos Martinez, it was more alarming to me that Jedd needed to be replaced. Gyorko must be banged up at the moment and trying to play through it. Dejong has played third base and could very easily slide over to allow Diaz and Kolten Wong to stay up the middle. I’m not in favor of benching any of theses players, but just want the club to have a chance to find a hot hand.
Promotion will cause a 40 man roster shuffle
Greg Garcia would be the odd man out and he doesn’t have any remaining options. Garcia would have to pass through waivers to return to the ball club. Yes, Garcia has been the only offense the last two games, but I think the club would be willing to take their chances on getting Garcia back. That could also open up a spot on the 40 man for the possible addition of Tyler O’Neill. The front office has warned us of possible roster churn. Why not start now?
