Cardinals Minors Report: Tyler O’Neill Goes Deep, Aledmys Diaz Injured, Blake Drake Homers Twice

Cardinals minors report for games happening Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Memphis 3, Salt Lake 2

Miguel Socolovich: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Mark Montgomery: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K

Ryan Sherriff (W, 5-0): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB

Josh Lucas (S, 10): 2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K

Nick Martini: 2-for-3

Tyler O’Neill: 1-for-2, HR,  2 RBI

Jose Adolis Garcia: 1-for-3, 3B

Tyler O’Neill didn’t start yesterday’s game, he entered after Aledmys Diaz was injured.

The injury comes at a bad time for Diaz, who was heating up at the plate. He recorded two hits in five of his last seven games but a serious hand injury could make 2017 a completely lost season. Tyler O’Neil’s first homer as a member of the Cardinals organization tied the game in the seventh.

Springfield 3, Tulsa 4

Austin Gomber: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Jacob Evans (BS)(L, 0-1): 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 K

Corey Littrell: 0.2 IP, 2 K

Landon Beck: 1 IP, K

Andrew Knizner: 2-for-4, RBI

Tommy Edman: 1-for-2, BB, RBI

Austin Gomber: 2-for-2

For the record, Austin Gomber is 3-for-7 as a hitter this year, which is a .714 average. On the mound, he bounced back from a bad outing five days ago. There’s no getting around his 4.48 ERA, though. His FIP is even higher at 4.68. Andrew Knizner deserves some love too. He’s hitting .322 with six doubles and two home runs since making the jump from Peoria. Kyle Reis has a more detailed look at Knizner here.  Magneuris Sierra is hitting just .227 since returning to Double-A. He struggled in his last few games in the big leagues so keep an eye on him over the next week or so.

Palm Beach 6, Tampa 7 (12)

Mike O’Reilly: 7 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Dailyn Martinez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K

Estarlin Arias (BS, 2): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K

Hector Mendoza (L, 0-2): 1.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Blake Drake: 2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI

Chris Chinea: 3-for-5, BB

Thomas Spitz: 1-for-6, 2B

Mike O’Reilly (The Flagler Phenom) struggled in his second start at High-A. He went eight innings and allowed two earned runs in his first start, so you can’t say he’s overwhelmed. The promotion was definitely deserved; he was 9-2 with a 1.75 ERA in twelve starts for Peoria. Blake Drake’s multi-homer game was his first as a professional.

State College 3, Mahoning Valley 2

Sam Tewes (W, 3-3): 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Will Latcham (S, 2): 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K

Scott Hurst: 1-for-4, R

Evan Mendoza: 1-for-4

Joshua Lopez: 1-for-4, RBI, R

Wood Myers: 1-for-3, 3B, RBI

Yariel Gonzalez: 1-for-2, 2 RBI

Sam Tewes has been solid for State College. The 2016 8th round pick has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last five starts. Wood Myers hit .410 in 61 at-bats for Johnson City but has slowed down since being (deservedly) promoted. Plus, highlights from a short season club? You bet.

Johnson City 5, Burlington 2

Evan Guillory (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 3 H, 6 K

Franyel Casadilla: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Fabian Blanco (S, 3): 1.2 IPO, 1 H 3 K

Imeldo Diaz: 2-for-4, 2B

Wade Ynfante: 2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI

Stanley Espinal: 1-for-3, HR

GCL Cardinals 6, GCL Marlins 7

Junior Gonzalez: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Enrique Perez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 K

Chris Hunt: 1.2 IP, 1 K

Patrick Dayton: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 K

Gabriel Getner: 1 IP, 1 R, 1 K

Delvin Perez: 0-for-5

Andres Luna: 2-for-5, BB, 2 RBI

Robbie Coman: 1-for-3, 2B

GCL Cardinals 9, GCL Marlins 10

Winston Nicacio: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

CJ Saylor: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 BB

Chris Hunt: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 K

Kevin Hamann: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB

Delvin Perez: 0-for-4, RBI

Johnathan Machado: 3-for-5, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI

Eliezer Alvarez: 2-for-6, 2B

Elehuris Montero: 2-for-5, 3 RBI

Terry Fuller: 2-for-4, 2 RBI

If you’re keeping track, that’s a 0-for-9 day from Delvin Perez. Only one of the ten runs allowed were earned in game two. Eliezer Alvarez had a fine day at the plate but made two errors at second base.
