Cardinals Minors Report: Alcantara solid, Eli Alvarez homers, Evan Mendoza on fire

Cardinals minors report for games happening Wednesday, July 2, 2017.

Springfield 2, Tulsa 3 (11)

Sandy Alcantara: 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K

Corey Littrell: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K

Rowan Wick: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 K

Landon Beck (L, 1-2): 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB

Magneuris Sierra: 1-for-5

Anthony Garcia: 2-for-5, R

Eliezer Alvarez: 2-for-5, HR

Tommy Edman: 1-for-3, RBI

Alvarez’s homer was a two-out, two-strike shot to tie the game in the ninth.

On the mound, it’s encouraging to see Alcantara turn in his third straight quality start. There’s still some areas of concern, particularly his strikeout and walk rates: over his three quality starts he’s struck out ten and walked nine.

Peoria 1, Beloit 7

Austin Warner (L, 1-2): 4.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K

Bryan Dobzanski: 1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB

Leland Tilley: 2.1 IP, 1 BB, 2 K

Stefan Trosclair: 1-for-3, BB, R

Brian O’Keefe: 2-for-4, RBI

Juan Yepez: 1-for-3, BB

It was just one of those games for Peoria. The offense only managed five hits and two walks. Austin Warner, last weeks Peoria pitcher of the week, has come back to earth over his last two starts, with eight earned runs over his last 9 1/3 innings, including 19 hits.

State College 4, West Virginia 1

Andrew Summerville (W, 2-0): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K

Jason Zgardowski: 1.1 IP, 1 ER, 1 K

Spencer Trayner (S, 3): 0.2 IP, 1 BB

Evan Mendoza: 3-for-4, 2B, HR

Yariel Gonzalez: 2-for-4, RBI

Dennis Ortega: 1-for-3, RBI

Wood Myers: 1-for-4, 2B

State College 5, West Virginia 6

Steven Farinaro (L, 1-1): 4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Alex Fagalde: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K

Evan Mendoza: 2-for-3, 2 RBI

Ricardo Bautista: 2-for-4, 2 RBI

Yariel Gonzalez: 2-for-3 RBI

Evan Mendoza is unconscious right now. He went 5-for-7 on the day with a double and a homer. He’s hitting .524 over his last ten games and .370/.434/.541 on the year with two homers, two triples, and 13 doubles. He deserves a promotion, but Danny Hudzina has manned the hot corner for Peoria, and he’s hitting .412 over his last ten with 8 homers on the year. I’d expect Mendoza to be mentioned this weekend on Prospect to Be Named Later.

GCL Cardinals 7, GCL Mets 2

Winston Nicacio: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

Enrique Perez: 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K

Jim Voyles: 1 IP, 1 K

Kevin Hamann: 1 IP, 2 K

Elehuris Montero: 1-for-4, HR

Dariel Gomez: 1-for-4, HR

Bruan Sanchez: 1-for-4, HR

Thanks for reading.
